Lemon balm contains large amounts of essential oils that contain trepene compounds (citral, linalool and citronellal), giving it a delicate citrus aroma. The remaining active substances are tannins, phenolic acids (caffeic, rosemary and felurol) and bitterness, as well as triterpene compounds, mucilages, flavonoids and organic acids. Lemon balm is also a good source of vitamin C and mineral salts.

Lemon balm – according to the literature, the lemon balm herb has properties that were used to alleviate the following ailments:

Lemon balm has a calming, blood pressure-regulating and antispasmodic effect. Thanks to this, it is used in insomnia and states of slight nervous arousal. It is an effective remedy for insomnia, migraines and hypertension. Lemon balm is also used in cases of heart palpitations caused by neurosis.

Large amounts of vitamin C have a strengthening effect, and lemon balm itself is used to treat inflammation. It has antiviral, antibacterial and astringent properties.

It is also used during a slimming diet because it has a diuretic and carminative effect, thus removing toxins from the body.

Lemon balm helps reduce nausea and nervousness during pregnancy. Drinking water during breastfeeding has a milk-promoting effect.

.

A METHOD OF PREPARING:

Lemon balm infusion – add a tablespoon of crushed herb or leaves to 250 ml of boiling water and brew covered for 15 minutes. Lemon balm infusion prepared in this way has a calming, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect, and relieves indigestion and nausea. The drink is consumed 3-4 sips several times a day.

Lemon balm wine – pour 50 grams of crushed lemon balm into a bottle of white wine (0.7 liter). After 5 days of maceration, strain the drink.
Wine is consumed in small quantities (a small, 25 ml glass) several times a day. It has calming, antispasmodic and soothing properties in the case of neuroses, migraines and indigestion.

Lemon balm leaf compresses accelerate healing and reduce the pain of wounds, ulcers and burns to which they are applied. They also reduce the body’s reaction to mosquito bites. Compresses are sterile pieces of material (e.g. gauze) dipped in an infusion prepared according to the above recipe. Compresses can also be applied to shingles. Use compresses soaked in the infusion to relieve painful swelling, e.g. during urate diathesis.

Lemon balm as a kitchen addition – lemon balm leaves can be added to soups, salads, meat and fish. They not only enliven the dish and are an elegant decoration of the plate, but also whet the appetite and absorb some of the odors (mainly fish). Lemon balm also looks good in transparent drinks with ice, lending them its lemon aroma and green color.
